There is some good news when it comes to hiring physicians. A new report by the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment (AAPPR) shows an increase in the percentage of filled physician searches. This is the first time the industry has seen an increase in more than five years.
The annual Internal Physician and Provider Recruitment Benchmarking Report has numerous insights that shine a light on where the provider recruitment industry stands:
- Family Medicine is the most common physician search at 10%. Hospital Medicine (9%), OB/GYN: General (6%) and Internal Medicine (5%) were the next most common searches.
- After decreasing in 2022, the percentage of offers accepted by physicians increased in 2023 to 83%.
- Turnover among physicians has decreased year-over-year but is still higher than 2019 and 2020.
- In 2023, the median time to hire physicians—measured from search launch to signed contract—varied widely by specialty, spanning 77 to 228 days.
The last stat hints at a vitally important point. Speed to hire and speed to onboard are immensely important data points for healthcare organizations. While some metrics are looking up, getting positions filled still takes too long, diminishing access to care and putting a strain on the existing staff.
We need to invest in solutions that get physicians onsite (or online) faster, so they can see more patients and relieve the stress on internal providers. This takes a different approach.

By addressing your organization’s unique situation with a dedicated solution engineer, Venn can develop processes and programs that work for you, allowing you to fill positions faster and secure access to care for your community.
Technology that Makes Sense—Technology is the engine powering workforce optimization and the easiest way to accelerate hiring timelines. Better data allows clients to make real-time decisions and be proactive on their staffing strategy. By integrating Venn’s technology solution, clients gain transparency and speed.
Onboarding Rooted in Efficiency—Often times, clients utilize numerous agencies. That creates too many points of contact, resulting in a difficult onboarding experience for clinicians and practice administrators. By getting clients out of the weeds, Venn’s program managers remove the administrative burden and speed up the onboarding process to get physicians on the job faster.
Locum tenens staffing can be a slow process, but with the right partner, healthcare organizations can rapidly increase the speed at which they fill open positions and get physicians to work faster.
